The NAMA Support Project China Integrated Waste Management (IWM NAMA) project aims to reduce GHG emissions of China’s waste sector and induce a transformational change in the way waste is handled through increasing the attractiveness of IWM and waste-to-energy solutions as financially sustainable low-carbon investment options. The supporting measures include:

  • Technical support regarding optimizing the efficiency of waste treatment facilities
  • Policy recommendations on upgrading an integrated waste management system
  • Capacity-building on “best practices of IWM”, introduction of EPR, waste prevention/3Rs etc.
  • Awareness-raising to promote waste segregation at source

Suzhou is one of the economic powerhouses in Eastern China and also one of the 46 Key Pilot Cities for mandatory waste segregation at source. In the scope of IWM NAMA, the city is working hard to lead in the implementation of a new waste management system and to ensure that it is low-carbon, sustainable and that various waste streams are treated efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner.

The project boundary of Suzhou City includes five districts (i.e. Gusu District, Gaoxin District, Wuzhong District, Xiangcheng District and Suzhou Industrial Park), covering 4,044 square kilometers in total. The Suzhou Municipal Administration Bureau and the Environmental Health Administrative Office are the authorities responsible for environmental sanitation management and MSW treatment.

GHG emissions from the waste sector*

  • Business-as-usual (BAU) scenario (tCO2e/y)
  • Integrated Waste Management (IWM) Scenario (tCO2e/y)
* the GHG emissions data provided for the year 2022 (both BAU and IWM Scenarios) is indicative. The emissions associated with the IWM Scenario are forecasted by the project team on the basis of activities that are to be implemented within the scope of the IWM NAMA project under its direct (technical assistance) and indirect (framework conditions) support. Every year, the actual data on emissions will be updated as result of GHG emissions monitoring and published on the website.
