July 26, 2023

On July 18th, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), jointly with other five departments, issued the Notice on Conducting Urban and Rural Sanitation Cleanups to Make Up for the Shortcomings of Public Sanitation Facilities.

The Notice proposes to actively summarize and promote the experience and practices of Zhejiang’s “Ten Million Projects”. On the basis of environmental cleanups and remediation, in-depth improvement of rural living environment needs to be further promoted, so as to build a livable, workable and beautiful countryside. As for large and megacities, in order to create a clean, tidy, comfortable tourism living environment, it is necessary to steadily build an infrastructure system with both daily operational functions and emergency response capabilities.

In addition, the Notice states that the focus should be put on the cleanup and sanitation remediation of urban and rural areas as well as of health institutions. The health service system, urban and rural waste and sewage management, and the comprehensive disposal capacity of medical waste and sewage should be improved. In this way, an innovative urban and rural social health governance model can be promoted to strengthen the foundation for the construction of a healthy and beautiful China in a point-to-point manner.

It is also clarified that all regions and departments should fully mobilize and organize broad public participation to form a good atmosphere in which everyone participates. This will change the outlook of urban and rural environmental sanitation and continuously improve the public’s satisfaction with environmental sanitation.
